Securing the learning environment from unsafe video content is easy with Jamf Safe Internet.

This workflow leverages the power of On-Device Content Filtering (ODCF) to block/allow specific traffic before it leaves the device. In this example, we will configure Jamf Safe Internet to perform the following actions:

  • Block
    • youtube.com
  • Allow
    • youtube.com/embed
    • googlevideo.com
    • ytimg.com
    • Embedded videos allowed (using the Jamf Teacher app)

I. Configure Jamf Safe Internet

1. In the Content Rules section, under the Video and Photo category, set the policy action for YouTube to Block.

Adding Content Rules to block access to inappropriate YouTube content.

2. In the Custom Rules section set the policy action for youtube.com/embed, googlevideo.com and ytimg.com to Allow.

Configuring allow lists to grant students access to cureated lists of educational content.

II. Specify embedded videos using Jamf Teacher

1. If you haven't already done so, configure Jamf Teacher for use in your environment.

2. On the teacher's computer (one that allows full access to YouTube), navigate to the video you wish to view and right-click on video and select Copy Embed Code from the context menu.

In the example video below, the YouTube URL is: https://youtu.be/RiYzD1h-YVQ

3. From the code above, copy the embedded version of the URL found between the quotes after the src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/RiYzD1h-YVQ

4. With the code copied to the clipboard, open the Jamf Teacher App and create a new lesson. Within the lesson, add an Allowed Website and paste the URL copied in step 3 here.

5. When ready, start the lesson.

6. On student devices, navigating to Safari > Bookmarks > Allowed Sites, students will be able to access the video configured for them by the teacher.

Considerations for teachers

  • If you wish to add more than one embedded video per lesson, simply repeat steps 1-4 for each video you wish to include.
  • Not every YouTube video supports embedded code, but many educational ones do.
  • If Jamf Teacher is not an option, educators can create and display a QR code with the link embedded. Additionally, creating a WebClip and deploying it to student devices through Jamf School is a great alternative.
  • It may be difficult for learners to browse for embedded content unless they already know the path. This is a limitation of allowing only embedded YouTube (and blocking full access).

Keep students learning safely by securing their devices from internet-based threats
