Manually Upgrading the JSS on Windows

Overview

The instructions in this article explain how to use the ROOT.war file to upgrade the JSS on Windows.

Procedure

  1. Download the JSS Manual Installation ZIP file from Jamf Nation: a. Log in to Jamf Nation and go to the My Assets page. b. Click Show JSS Installer downloads and download the JSS Manual Installation file.
  2. On your Windows server, create a backup of the current database. For instructions, see "Backing Up the Database" in the JSS Installation Guide for Windows.
  3. Create a backup of the Tomcat directory located in C:\Program Files\JSS\Tomcat.
  4. Stop Tomcat: a. Go to Start menu > Services. b. Stop the Apache Tomcat service.
  5. Rename and move the existing ROOT.war file and ROOT folder from C:\Program Files\JSS\Tomcat\webapps\ to a location outside of that directory. It is recommended that you keep the ROOT.war file and ROOT folder until the upgrade is complete.
  6. Copy the ROOT.war from the Manual Installation ZIP to C:\Program Files\JSS\Tomcat\webapps.
  7. Start Tomcat: a. Go to Start menu > Services. b. Start the Apache Tomcat service. The ROOT.war unpacks during this time. It may take two or three minutes for that process to complete.
  8. Stop Tomcat again.
  9. Go to the \ROOT\WEB-INF\xml\ directory that you renamed in step 5 and copy the DataBase.xml file to C:\Program Files\JSS\Tomcat\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\xml. When prompted, choose to overwrite the existing DataBase.xml file.
  10. Go to the \ROOT\WEB-INF\classes\ directory that you renamed in step 5 and copy the ESAPI.properties and log4j.properties files to C:\Program Files\JSS\Tomcat\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\classes. When prompted, choose to overwrite the existing files.
  11. Start Tomcat again.

The upgrade is complete.
