Mac Mini Server Overheating

I have posted to the Apple community already with no responses, so I figured I would keep trying my sources.

I am experiencing overheating issues with my Mac Mini netboot server. Below is what I am working with.

Model Name: Mac mini Late 2012 Model Identifier: Macmini6,2 Processor Name: Intel Core i7 Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 4 L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB L3 Cache: 6 MB Memory: 16 GB Boot ROM Version: MM61.0106.B04 SMC Version (system): 2.8f1 System Version: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28) Kernel Version: Darwin 13.3.0 Boot Volume: Macintosh HD Boot Mode: Normal Server Version: 3.1.2 (13S4517) Netboot OS: 10.9.3 (Available via NFS)

And this is part of the log file from the server. This is occurring around the same time every day. Are there certain ports or services that are possibly being blocked by the firewall? Is this a domain or DNS issue? I have already had the device checked out by the Apple Store and they were unable to replicate the issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you upgrade it to Mavericks recently? This was a known bug with the systemstats process, an issue with the old database. Here is one thread:

SSD or HD? I find the SSD's work much better and overheat less.

What are your current netboot settings on that server? that may be of use in assisting you.

also, have you checked the placement of the machine, airflow, etc? Minis still need decent airflow and a coolish floor surface to rest on.

"caught burning CPU!" this comes up when a process goes nuts. I see this all the time when McAfee Antivirus is doing its scans or when it is attempting to update itself. It doesn't mean it's physically overheating (at least in my case...). As @alexjdale pointed out, the root cause is most likely software. If you want to be sure the Mac is physically OK, you may want to run a AST MRI scan on the server. MRI will check the condition of the systems thermal sensors. In the event of a actual thermal overload, the server should hard power off to save itself from damage.

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I will be testing some of these items today as time permits and will post any new findings I come up with.

alexjdale - I've only had the device for about a month now, and it shipped with Mavericks.

pblake - Two 1TB HD

johncwelch - Netboot settings: Netinstall enabled for ethernet, Availability = NFS, Access = all Mac models, Advanced = Image Index: 832. Is there a specific setting you are looking for? Also, the Mini is in our data center, so air temp and flow are def not factors in this case.

Sonic84 - I came across an article that mentioned being on a .local domain can wreak havoc on the Mini's server processes, that's why I originally asked if this could possibly be a domain or network issue of some sort. My expertise are not in that area unfortunately. Again, Apple Store had the device for several days and ran extensive tests and verified hardware was not the issue, and suggested the problem was more than likely environmental issues. That's when I started pulling logs and found what I posted.

My experience is on par with pblake. I have a few of both SSD and spin Mac minis and the fans come on much less with the SSD units.

Is anyone able to interpret the log that was submitted? I would like to know what bootpd: bsdpd: is referring to and what might be causing this to happen. Thanks again for the help!

They are processes of NetBoot I believe.

Is this happening when NetBooting? are the mini's Disks ok?

I am seeing these processes after district operating hours when no one should be netbooting. That is what I am so perplexed about. The disks are good. I have run all of the diagnostics available, and I've completely rebuilt the OS twice. In addition, Apple store couldn't find anything either. They suggested its my environment.

Did you ever find a resolution for this? I'm experiencing the same thing with 5 of 15 new Mac Mini Servers.
