InstallESD.dmg over NetBoot vs. USBboot

Hey all,

If I boot a mac from a NetBoot image and use Casper Imaging to install the InstallESD.dmg, the progress bars moves quickly and the only thing that gets installed on the target drive is /private/.

If I boot the same machine from a USBboot disk (which is the exact same image as the NetBoot), then the InstalESD.dmg works as it should and lays down the image.

Same thing occurs if I try to Compile a configuration that contains the InstallESD.dmg. From the NetBoot image it fails. From the USBboot it works.

Has anyone experienced this?

The USBboot and NetBoot image both point to the same jss and distribution.

I've had this issue for many years and always resorted to installing an OS from Internet Recovery because I never had success pushing an OS Installer from within Casper Imaging.

Honestly I only use InstallESD.dmg via Casper Admin for upgrades. However, I do remember a rather critical checkbox in casper admin that says something like "Install as OS" when you do it that way. I have no idea if this is your issue but it would be super simple if it were and it fits the description of your issue.
