Enrolled via 'User-Initiated' even after wiping/enrolling via DEP

Hello jamf nation!

(First post please be gentle)

I'm trying to get a profile onto an iPhone that isn't removable. I know you can do this using DEP (so the 'remove profile' button doesn't appear to the user) as I tested it on an iPad.

The steps I've performed:

  1. Connected iPhone to Macbook with Apple Configurator 2.8 installed
  2. Put it in prepared mode and erased/restored the iPhone
  3. Went into Apple Business Manager and added the serial number to my JSS
  4. Had it appear in JSS as supervised, but 'enrolment via' is on 'user initiated'

I've since

  1. Retried the above steps, and was getting same results so >
  2. Deleted the iPhone from my JSS
  3. Tried re-adding the serial of the iPhone via Apple Business Manager
  4. Apple Configurator/Prepared/Erased and restored

Now it isn't showing up in my JSS when I search on the serial number

I have a feeling I could be performing these steps out of order.

Any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

Actually, I think I found my problem - I hadn't applied a pre-stage enrolment profile.

More specifically - I hadn't checked 'Prevent Unenrollment'

Though I'll test this Monday.

That’s seems right. If you don’t have them automatically assign and then don’t manually assign them then it won’t inherit the work flow.

Ok so I've done the following without success - I can still remove the MDM profile and reset the phone as if it was sold to a customer brand new

  1. Create pre-stage enrolment
  2. Added the serial number to the scope
  3. Checked 'prevent unenrolment'

Should I prepare through configurator?
