It wouldn't be the JNUC without a sunrise 5K! The plan is the same as last year: it's not a race, just some sysadmins going for a morning run. Groups may form, but this should be a social, no-drop run too. Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there!
A few things to know...
Morning temps should be around 40F (4C), so bring the right clothing. We got lucky and it was 58F and perfect last year. Someone will go no matter what the weather does: rain, shine, or snow.
We'll start at 7:00am from the main entrance at the Guthrie. Sessions won't start until 9:00am so there should be plenty of time to run, get back to the hotels to get cleaned up, and return to the Guthrie for a quick coffee before things start.
It's a great route this year consisting of one large loop with no repeated sections and only two road crossings. It should be much easier to follow than last year. Surfaces are 90% paved, with short sections of wooden planks, metal grating, and gravel. Strava segment of the course: http://www.strava.com/segments/5811553
0.0mi \- Begin at the main entrance of the Guthrie Theater and head east.
0.15mi \- Turn left into Gold Medal Park (at the third sidewalk).
0.25mi \- Cross West River Pkwy and turn left. Continue down a slight hill on the paved trail next to West River Pkwy, and pass under the Endless Bridge of the Guthrie Theater.
0.45mi \- Continue straight onto the wooden plank road, passing by the Mill City Museum.
0.60mi \- Turn right onto Portland Ave S and continue under the Stone Arch Bridge.
0.65mi \- Follow Portland Ave S to the right and continue on the running trail, passing under the Stone Arch Bridge a second time.
0.80mi \- Turn sharp right following the trail and continue onto the metal grating decks of the Mill Ruins Park.
0.90mi \- Turn left and cross the metal grating bridge.
0.93mi \- Turn left and continue past the mill ruins.
1.05mi \- Turn right and head up the hill. This is the largest hill of the course. It is steepest at the bottom with an average grade of 6% over about a quarter mile. Near the top you'll run past the 35W Bridge Memorial. Continue straight on the trail.
1.60mi \- Pass under the new 35W bridge and immediately turn right to cross West River Pkwy. The paved trail will continue under the 10th Ave bridge and up a small hill.
1.75mi \- Turn left onto the Northern Pacific Bridge #9. This converted railroad bridge is now dedicated to bicycle and foot traffic.
*2.05mi \- *HIDDEN LEFT TURN* After crossing the bridge and passing Dunn Bros Coffee, turn left onto the gravel by the railroad tracks. This section does not look like a path initially, but becomes a paved trail after 500ft. Continue straight along the trail under the 10th Ave bridge and new 35W bridge.
2.60mi \- Exit the paved trail and look for the Stone Arch Bridge and Minneapolis skyline to the left.
2.65mi \- Continue onto the Stone Arch Bridge.
3.11mi \- Finish in the parking lot at the end of the bridge.
