Scope settings/apps by class

With the new version of mss there is the ability to create classes that can be populated with a list of students.

It would be great if we could use the classes as a scoping object.
It means we could easily assign apps to classes rather than having to manually add iPads into static device groups.

Say we have 3 year 5 classes and only 1 is doing french instead of japanese.
You could have that classes populated via a cdv and then assign the app to it and those students would automatically get the app

I would really like to see this as well. We have an anatomy class that has 90ish students every year. There are lots of really good anatomy apps available and it would make life much easier if I could us classes in scope for VPP Assignments.

We have 19 schools and over 3000 classes and we need to have a way that static groups are created from these classes so we can push out apps to our students.

We have a large educational environment, and this would be a huge help to us as well being able to scope apps directly to classes would make the workflow much easier.

@tenutaf, @Jookyseacap Would like to check how do you guys enrol the ipad? Is it just use the default enrol profile to enrol?

So far my method I been using is create individual profile to enroll every classroom ipad. This is to allow me to set class and use casper focus, assign apps to class and inventory.

You may refer to below which I also hoping to put on request. As long we can select class profile to enrol it will be very useful to do other thing.

Yes we enroll iPads using a standard prestage enrollment profile that requires AD login for the users, so that they are attached to the iPad automatically when enrolling.

We also get a nightly export from our SIS system of all student classes with enrolled students and the teacher information for the class. We utilize the SIS importer to import all that data into the JSS, which creates all casper focus classes for us and has the students in the correct classes with the teachers able to focus any of the students in that class. This system has worked quite well for us and we're a pretty large district with quite a few classes(The import creates ~19000 unique classes)

For app scoping, we currently only use free apps, but are working on implementing a system for schools to purchase, the system for purchasing apps will likely wait until we can distribute VPP to devices, but if that does not work our AD team is using the same SIS export to create AD groups for every class and assigns all the students in those classes to the corresponding AD groups, so we can if needed scope apps via Ad groups to specific classes.

This would be an extremely valuable tool to assign paid apps to a class in a department that paid for it. Since it works for eBooks it should be simple to extend it to apps. Settings would be helpful as well.

I have just discovered this capability is missing and am shocked. Why is this not done already?!

I have numerous classes that use numerous different apps, including some paid ones. I will not force apps onto students iPads which are not needed. My only other current option that I can see is to set up a static user group, or as mentioned by Jookyseacap above to import all my classes into Active Directory groups (which I don't have time for nor any other need). What a pain!

If e-books can be scoped to classes why not apps and VPP assignments of those apps? After that, what about configuration profiles? Maybe I have a photography class for example which needs to be able to use the camera on the iPad but which needs to be disabled for everyone else. Needs for all of these things exist and it scares me that this request is now 2 years old and yet still "under review"!

3 Years now of being 'Under Review' and this still isn't implemented.

This really needs to be implemented - it cuts out so much time from the workflow to be able to assign apps to classes rather than classes to apps.

@treybach Do you have any tricks to be able to achieve this?

Now that Apple Classroom is in full swing, please get this feature added.

I just googled my self here because I wanted to find a way to distribute certain apps to just one class or one level of classes.
I'm shocked this is not possible. This is such an obvious thing for a school to want. How can it be this is not implemented?

JSS knows my classes. It only needs to let me create a dynamic or static mobile device group FROM that class, problem would be solved. But I have to pick each student from a list of 100eds. That can't be their intention for real...

any news on this?

I also think its very silly we are unable to scope apps to a class its a very obvious feature that is missing.

Almost 5 years later... It's still not implemented. I guess I'll have to figure out some kind of convoluted work around. :|

Wow, this should have been implemented A LONG time ago! This will cut down on so much work when trying to scope to students at secondary schools, and would even eliminate many smart/static groups for elementary level students.

We'd love to have this. 70 locations each with their own apps is hard to manage without the ability to scope to classes. Please implement soon.

This is an absolute (and logical) necessity for schools. For those linking their SIS to ASM, the classes are updated to reflect the current enrollment. Besides saving an enormous amount of time (from manual assignment), students transferring into a class will automatically receive the assigned apps for that class. Perhaps I'm missing something but, this seems like a no brainer!

Implementing this would save us hours of time.

Our School District has 20,000 iPads, we manage roughly 19,000 for students including installing apps. It is PAINFUL to have to, 1 by 1 MANUALLY add the Smart Group to the apps. (a set of 35 apps takes us over an hour to scope, BRUTAL)

I am absolutely shocked that JAMF has not implemented the ability to scope a Smart Group with a predetermined set of apps.

We should be able to add a list of apps to a smart group and have it deploy said apps to all scoped devices.

Along the lines of a Configuration Profile > Restrictions > Tv and IOS > Applications > Allow these apps. Instead of allow apps, we have the option of "Install these apps" for any device scoped to the Smart Group. This will also solve the issue of us currently not easily being able to see what apps are scoped to a Mobile device group. This also is very painful to not be able to just have a quick look as to what apps the group is installing... PLEASE JAMF.. MAKE THE PAIN GO AWAY.... ;)

Bump for this feature request. Education organizations could really benefit from the ability to scope apps and books by class. For apps that require licenses to be purchased we want to be able to scope them in a granular fashion so we aren't wasting licenses. It is common for us to get a request for an app or book from a specific teacher that wants those resources just for the students in his/her class. Right now, that requires scoping to individual devices or usernames. Scoping by class would be much more efficient and dynamic.

I don't want to be "that person", but I have used this feature with a competing MDM and keep waiting for JAMF to get it. I even sent screen recordings of the process to them. It is silly and I was hoping to switch to JAMF but it looks like it STILL isn't a thing. Sad.

How hard would it be to create a smart group for apps to scope out to smart devices? This is a much needed feature.
