Customized Lock Screen Text for iOS Devices

There has been variations of this feature request submitted over the past few years and partial implementations to the JSS. The ability to manage the lock & home screen wallpapers for institutional shared devices is a huge benefit for admins especially those that oversee a large inventory of iPads. We now have the ability in 9.81 to set and prevent changes to the wallpaper. However one small item has been over looked and seems to never make it to reality. It would be a huge benefit for the Lock screen to have customized text capabilities such as the Device Name, Serial Number, etc.... In Apple Configurator versions 1.x and now 2.x this is available provided you prepare the devices through AC. In AC2 customized text uses Tokens such as Device Name, Serial Number, Type etc.. those Tokens are replaced by the devices unique variables and the shows on the lock screen such as the devices set Name. In my testing of AC2 with MDM auto enrollment through DEP I cannot use the wallpaper function at all when devices are prepared in that way. Setting the wallpaper can then only be done from the JSS for a single device or to a group of devices by a action>send remote commands function but its missing the feature of customized text. Please add this function.

As of the Casper Suite version 9.9, a Mobile Device Configuration Profile Payload for the Lock Screen Message was implemented. Supervised iOS 9.3 and later devices can be customized using this payload. Payload Variables can be used in the Message and Asset Tag fields control the Lock Screen Message in a more automated fashion.

I also would like the ability to automatically set the lock screen for members of a group, maybe by adding the option to a profile. In my case we have a group for "lost devices" which are those that have gone missing, some are still contacting server because of DEP. I would like to set a lock screen that asks the user to return it with having to remember to do it manually.

Graeme

This has NOT BEEN implemented!!

What was requested is to mirror the functionality in AC2. The config profile option of "Lock Screen Message" shows up as small text at very bottom of iPad. Not the ability to add the device name to the middle of the lock screen as apart of the wallpaper.

Maybe a wallpaper editing function would be helpful. ie:upload wallpaper and then edit it with device info via an online image editor.

I agree with the last comment. It has NOT been implemented.

@rcampbell.jamf and @JKielbasa can we gather a bit more information? Using the Lock Screen payload allows us to send two customizable text fields to the Lock Screen of the device. We can use the Payload Variables to add items that are important for our particular environment, such as $DEVICENAME. Is the issue we are struggling with that the text on the device is too small to read when we use this new payload? Or are we looking to modify not only the Lock Screen but the Homescreen of the device? Thanks for the additional understanding on the use cases we're still seeing today!

@beth.lindner Thanks for the fast response! I think it's a combination of issues.

  1. The text that you can add is very small and located at the very bottom of the screen.

  2. There is no way to add text such as $DEVICENAME to the center of the lock screen like can be done with configurator.

In a perfect world the text size, font, location and color would all be options to adding "Tagging" to a device.

Thanks for the response @JKielbasa, I very much appreciate your time! It is indeed pretty small font and at the foot of the screen instead of centered.

When this Feature Request was reviewed it seemed like what we needed was to see information on the Lock Screen that easily identified devices or to use the Lock Screen to send end user messages regarding the device. The solution idea presented in this post was that we do an 'on the fly edited wallpaper' concept, but we decided to implement the Lock Screen payload and add Automated Management for Wallpaper to help us tackle these struggles. However, we continue to look for feedback from the members here on whether or not an implementation got us all the way to a solution or if more enhancements are desired. Would you be able to help us understand the current priority for enhancements to the displayed text by submitting a new feature request? That would be very helpful for us to reset the bar and to get an indicator of the community needs with regards information displayed on the Lock Screen. At this time we do not have immediate plans to add 'wallpaper on the fly' but we're always re-evaluating based on this community. Please let me know if anything sounds crazy!

I'm on the latest release version 9.99.0-t1494340586 and I don't have this option. Was it removed? The Asset Tag field in the Lock Screen Message payload is just a text box.

Update: So apparently this does work, but not like the first post shows. You gotta use the variables. And not all of them work. Example: $Phone doesn't work on our iPhones. :/

@coreythomas sorry to hear there are struggles with those Payload Variables! To get a Product Issue filed, could you please contact the Support department for assistance? They help do some digging and will get that Product Issue in the system! Thanks for taking a look at the feature.

Just a question on this, if we would like the asset tag to be shown on the lock screen, I see where to do it, but what are we supposed to put in the box? Each iPad has its own Asset Tag (which is filled in the JSS). Is there a reference code (as someone put above $iPhone, but for asset tag?) If there is a place that shows these variables that would be awesome! Thank you for your time.

@christina_luis Here it the most up do date Administrator's Guide http://docs.jamf.com/9.100.0/casper-suite/administrator-guide/Mobile_Device_Configuration_Profiles.html with a section regarding "Payload Variables for Mobile Device Configuration Profiles." Give that a go and see if it helps out! Our Jamf Support department is an amazing wealth of knowledge and can help troubleshoot if we run into any issues.

We are moving in the right direction, but we'd like to be able to add QR codes - like in AC2. Or even the serial number in barcode format so our inventory system can read them.
