Schedule iOS updates

It would be nice to be able to schedule iOS updates. We don't want to start updating our iPads during the day due to network usage. We would like to be able to schedule an update for sometime in the late evening or early morning without having to manually push it through.

What version of JSS are you running or where is the setup to activate Update iOS Version?

I am running the latest JSS version 9.82. If I'm understanding your question correctly, the way that you force an iOS update through the JSS is by going to Mobile Devices, using the Action button at the bottom of the page, Click Send Remote Commands, and on that page you can force an update.

Yes, it would be nice to schedule them so that it could be done after school hours.

This feature could be added to the automated management part of smart mobile device groups. It would be nice to be able to get them updated without impacting business during the day.

This should be possible with new MDM commands introduced in iOS 10.3 (supervised only)

@davidhiggs how is this possible? I tried to reboot the device after the update but it was stuck on the Get Started screen.

This is very important to us also as many iPads in multiple retail locations need to be updated after hours

Yep, would also love to be able to schedule iOS updates.

This is a major need for us. We use iPads to control Zoom video conference rooms.

This would be an extremely useful feature. Right now, sending an update to devices does not work if the device is not connected to WiFi. If the update is scheduled, that would allow the devices to update as if choosing the option to install overnight.

instead of scoping to all ipads is there a way to schedule to certain static/smart groups?

Agreed with every one else, this would be useful to schedule or at least have a little more control over how/when it is pushed out rather than only manually.

@lamador Yes, once you click into the group, click the View button at the bottom to show all devices in that group. From there, you can click the Action button at the bottom like usual, Send Remote Commands, and then Update iOS Version on supervised devices.

Bumping this thread: In working with our network engineer at the ESD- we discovered that our apple devices (OSX and iOS) are going out to the internet at noon everyday- then pushing our network usage to 99.8% (download)

It is absolutely crippling our district, currently our best option is to rate limit all apple traffic at the firewall level.. obviously not the greatest solution. Everything in Jamf that we can set- is set to update apps etc, at 2 a.m.

Even an apple update server can only control OSX updates...

We would also like to be able to schedule iOS updates on our students' iPads.

@cruess are you running a caching server? Or High Sierra or above machine sharing content (in high Sierra caching is built into the OS) is accessible via System Preferences, sharing.

Also look at what policies you have set to run at that time, and also perhaps auto updates in JSS.

Hope it’s a start.

Why stop with just update, why not addd all action to policy(s).
So you could have policy(s) that can lock device on x date, or clear pass code on x date.
Or restart all ipads on saturdays.
Enable bluetooth on enrollment.

There's a glitch with the iOS update process in that it won't install/restart the device if there's a passcode on it. I've created a FR that addresses this issue so that the remote command actually does what it's supposed to.

+1 from me. I manage iPads for Zoom in offices all around the world, and we can only update them on off hours, which means I end up having to work at all kinds of odd hours to accommodate this. It would be so nice to be able to schedule updates (and any other MDM commands too).

Could be nice to automate it with the automated management of a smart group
An idea for the next 10.14

This would be a great feature for educational institutions, where students move between campuses, by enhancing the use of Limitations to Network Segments when applying Geographic based policies on iOS devices.
