Office 2016 Standalone Install - Patch Definitions

This request is to bring back the Office 2016 track into patch definitions.

Right now, per software.macadmins
Excel 2016 latest version is 16.16.18091001
Excel 365/2019 latest version is 16.17.18090901

Jamf has decided to just show 2019 versions and asked a separate FR be entered to get the 2016 track to show.

Please see this post or this post for reference

https://macadmins.software/ has latest versions listed. It doesn't look like I can modify the FR unfortunately.

Hey @CasperSally - Just wanted to chime in and let everyone know that we will still be adding 2016 updates to the current definitions. They will not however show up as the latest version, 2019 will. Sorry if there was any confusion there.

16.16.18091001 is currently listed within the Office definitions.

Thanks!

@robinsonjo

Thanks for the update. Unfortunately in its current state, the only thing we use patch for is reporting, so it just looks like everything is out of date on our end. We will go to 2019 next summer (K12).

Would love if jamf could provide some info on patch, or will there be info coming at JNUC? I posted asking for info here, too.

Agreed. This is a sub-optimal solution, since now I'm going to have to explain to my CIO that it isn't that the Macs are lagging behind, it is that Jamf reporting is "just wrong". Not the conversation I want to have with him. This is how CIO's get frustrated with Macs in the environment.

Thanks for weighing in everyone. We do have a feature request to enable admins to choose approved versions for reporting purposes. You can weigh in on that discussion or upvote it here: https://www.jamf.com/jamf-nation/feature-requests/5704/allow-for-selecting-approved-software-version-s-in-patch-management

We see this as the best long-term solution for addressing scenarios where reports may be misleading and show that a certain version is out-of-compliance.

Thanks - that sounds like a solid compromise. I have a new CIO, and trying to explain to him that "red really doesn't mean what you think it means" was not a very reassuring conversation. The ability to set "our" production version (not just on MS Office) is huge. We run a structured test/prod cycle, and being marked out of compliance when the latest version hasn't even hit "test" is always frustrating.

Agree. Hope the other FR will be implemented soon.

Hi Guys

I installed 16.17 office updates on few of our test macs and it is prompting me with message "Activate Office to Create and Edit.Buy Office or Sig in to activate office if you'have already bought it "

Has anyone seen this message and can advise me please ? We dont have Patch definiations enabled as yet and do it via JSS policies.

@ Yogini90

Office 2019 (if users aren't logging in themselves for activation) requires running the VL Serializer 3.0 after installing Office 2019.

You can get it from here:

Actually, you can only get the Volume License Serializer 3.0 from the Microsoft Volume License Service Center. The link is on macadmins.software, but you won't be able to download it without a login.

While the compromise proposed by @brandon.gil works great overall, I feel there will be a bunch of Mac Admins out there that will have to report on both version tracks for a time given that Office2019/O365 has a minimum OS requirement of 10.12. While the argument can easily be made that users need to upgrade the OS, understand that in many cases an OS upgrade is harder to plan and accomplish when dealing with remote users. Being able to show both Office 2016 and Office 2019 and their patch stats side by side will help keep the managers off my back, while being able to reach out to users informing them of their need to upgrade both their OS and version of Office.

I'm not sure how this is still an issue that has not been resolved but it is.
As someone mentioned in the duplicate thread, this really should be marked as critical.
Please Jamf, get on this.

This really does need to get resolved. It should have never happened in the first place. JAMF 10.11 is about to be released with no resolution. For as much as this software costs, it should be less "community driven" and more developer driven.
