Welcome Keynote

Jamf CEO John Strosahl greeted an enthusiastic crowd, and thousands more joined via live stream from across the globe. "Good morning, Jamf Nation," said Strosahl, "and welcome to Nashville!"

"This is my favorite time of the year," continued Strosahl. "A time when the greatest community in tech comes together to connect, create, and cultivate our Apple management and security skills."

After a brief overview of Jamf's extensive history in Apple device management and security, Strosahl thanked Jamf Nation for involvement in requesting important features, offering feedback, and continuing to help expand Jamf and Apple's capabilities.

"We take great pride in being part of Apple’s continued growth at work," said Strosahl, "You believe Apple is the most powerful tool for work, and we still believe that Apple will flip the market in the next decade — becoming the dominant tool among end users."

He shared a few key statistics supporting this idea, and illustrating how Jamf is growing with Apple.

And in today’s environment, where the support of hybrid and remote work is the norm and the need for protecting your environment is a must, we recognize the responsibility of an Apple admin has only grown more complex.

This JNUC, Jamf and its partners will show you how to go further with Jamf.

Secure device configuration: compliance

Product Manager II Matt Taylor joined Jamf Nation to discuss how Jamf will continue bringing security closer to its management framework.

"We’re here to help you take charge of security where you have the expertise and tools," said Taylor, who discussed the macOS Security Compliance Project (mSCP), supported by Apple and Jamf. This project simplifies secure Mac configurations and now extends to iOS and iPadOS, securing mobile platforms as well.

At the Jamf Event, we introduced a new compliance monitoring approach by integrating Jamf Protect’s Compliance Baseline dashboard with Jamf Compliance Editor. This simplifies building, managing, auditing and reporting CIS benchmark compliance across your Mac environment. Based on Jamf Nation's feedback, Taylor announced the introduction of Compliance Benchmarks in Jamf Pro.

Thijis Xhaflaire, Consulting Engineer, Security, joined the stage to show Compliance Benchmarks in action.

Compliance Benchmarks simplify CIS compliance for Mac (and, coming soon, iOS and iPadOS!).

This demonstration illustrated how simple it is to set up Compliance Benchmarks.

Beta access will be available to all Jamf Pro customers in the coming months

Least privilege access with Jamf Connect demo

Another key requirement for many compliance standards is enforcing least privilege access. On Mac, this means strong controls over who can log in, under what conditions and what permissions they get. “Earlier this year we updated Jamf Connect to allow users to elevate their system privileges temporarily,” said Taylor. Noting that we did this to empower users to overcome and self solve problems, without involving IT.

We’ve enhanced Jamf Protect’s endpoint telemetry with broader visibility and richer logs to satisfy stringent compliance standards such as NIST 800, DISA STIG or the Essential 8.

Combined with Jamf Connect and a SIEM of your choice, this provides real-time visibility and logging of user access activities.

What's new for Jamf Protect?

Taylor also discussed how Jamf Protect’s endpoint telemetry goes beyond satisfying compliance.

Jamf Protect's endpoint telemetry allows IT and Security teams to:

  • Hunt undetected threats and deter shadow IT, with rich insight into all software execution in the environment
  • Accelerate incident response with detailed logging of persistence, authentications, remote access, configuration changes, system events and many more
  • Proactively address user experience issues with detailed app performance metrics and crash reports for a smoother digital experience

Vulnerability reporting

Jamf Protect’s vulnerability reporting has been enhanced, highlighting high-risk areas to prioritize patching. And our App Installer catalog now includes nearly 200 third-party apps, allowing for quick vulnerability patching with Jamf-managed packages.

Jamf Threat Labs

At the heart of our commitment to security is Jamf Threat Labs: our team of experienced threat researchers, cybersecurity experts and data scientists, who help identify and remediate security risks for Mac and mobile.

Malware

Over the past year, we've seen a sharp increase in InfoStealer malware on Macs, with AtomicStealer becoming the second-biggest threat. In response, we've strengthened our machine learning capabilities to quickly enhance protection against all types of malware.

Phishing

Since over 90% of cyber-attacks start with phishing, we're advancing our detection with new machine-learning models and moving detection onto mobile devices. This improves the speed and accuracy of phishing detection while ensuring user privacy.

Jamf's goal is to help organizations take charge of security while keeping users productive.

Henk and Thijs from the University Medical Center-Utrecht share their story, showcasing that security is an essential part of your remit as the IT admin, no matter what your organization. Whether you’re in small business, Education, or Enterprise, Jamf provides the security tools you need.

Jamf AI Assistant

Jamf’s CTO, Beth Tschida, introduced the assembly to AI Assistant: a powerful natural-language interface available across all Jamf admin portals.

"AI Assistant combines a vast knowledge base powered by Retrieval Augmented Generation and direct integration to Jamf’s products APIs," said Tschida. "This allows the Assistant to gather, analyze, and present you with the most relevant information, right when you need it."

Tschida walked Jamf Nation through a demonstration of AI Assistant.

AI Assistant beta program

"We believe AI Assistant is truly a game changer for Apple device management and security," said Tschida, "and we’re thrilled to announce that we’re opening sign-ups for the AI Assistant beta program today!"

This initial release, accessible through Jamf Account, will feature a knowledge skill capable of answering any general support question about Jamf products and services.

Attendees can learn more about the beta version at the AI Assistant booth in the expo hall to learn more.

Charles Edge: in memoriam

Sam Johnson took a moment to talk about Charles Edge, a much-beloved member of Jamf Nation.

"Charles was a brilliant technologist and wrote several books on Apple management and security," explained Johnson. "He pushed the boundaries and helped us understand where the industry, Apple and Jamf were going.

"He loved this community," Johnson continued, "and although his name preceded him, he never acted like it. He always had a moment to talk to anyone about anything. His humility allowed him to make many personal connections. His accomplishments, albeit numerous, were second to the fact that he was a great friend, colleague, and pillar of our community. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the impact Charles made on us all."

Jamf Nation Rewards program

Before exiting the stage, Johnson introduced the new Jamf Nation Rewards program.

"There is a lot of pride and accomplishment that comes with connections throughout all of Jamf Nation," said Johnson. "We want to recognize each and every one of you who contribute to the community."

This program rewards contributions to Jamf Nation with points for each activity or interaction, which customers can redeem for merchandise or experiences such as Jamf training courses. Sign up before the end of JNUC this Thursday to earn 50 points! Minimum OS enforcement

This September, Jamf introduced minimum OS enforcement at the time of enrollment in Jamf Pro.

This feature, at enrollment:

  • Allows access to sensitive organizational data only if the device meets a threshold of security compliance
  • Offers immediate baseline device security
  • The ability to layer organizational requirements in, including critical local administrator accounts

Local administrator password management

With Jamf Pro 10.45, Jamf added support for a local admin password solution via the Jamf Pro API. This was specific to the admin account created during Automated Device Enrollment using a pre-stage.

In Jamf Pro 10.49 Jamf added support for the Jamf Management account created as part of User-Initiated Enrollment settings, and Jamf Pro 11.3 offered the ability to view passwords and audit history for local admin accounts.

Local Admin Management Solution (LAPS)

As of Jamf Pro 11.5, released in May 2024, Apple administrators can view and modify global LAPS settings within the web interface, including password rotation intervals.

Microsoft’s Partner Compliance Management API

Integrating your critical management and reporting infrastructure with identity, this API makes everything available in more cloud environments. And if you’d like to preview Microsoft’s Platform Single Sign-On tools, you can enable your Mac users to use strong phishing-resistant credentials for easy logins, especially when combined with Jamf Connect for local account provisioning.

Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro management

Jamf was proud to include support for Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro this year, including Automated Device Enrollment with visionOS 2.0.

"Now I’d like to welcome one of our talented engineers, Rob, to the stage to assist me with a demo," said English, ushering Rob Potvin, Senior Consulting Engineer, to the stage.

They then demonstrated:

  • Managing extensions in Safari
  • Using the Okta Browser Plugin
  • Adding components for service configurations

Managed Device Attestation

"Managed Device Attestation," said English, "is about providing strong assurance to admins and organizations that a device identity is legitimate, as soon as it's enrolled."

Managed Device Attestation:

  • Leverages cryptographically verified signals about each device
  • Simplifies device networking through Jamf’s Network Relay extension
  • Supports Network Relay configuration profiles for those who don't use Jamf's Network Relay service
  • Offers ecure tunneling to internal resources that doesn’t require a VPN
  • Supports Automated Certificate Management Environment (ACME): certificate payloads as a modern alternative to the legacy SCEP

Declarations Explorer

If you’re someone who wants to experiment and explore the latest and greatest Apple has to offer now, English shared our new “sidekick” utility — built for you to test these workflows — Declarations Explorer. It uses the same backend services as Blueprints to let you try key declarative workflows to manage and secure your devices, including passcode policy, disk and network access, service configuration and background task management.

Declarations Explorer will be available as a prototype for Jamf Cloud customers later this year.

Mobile or "deskless" employees

"The majority of the world’s workers," said English, "—80%, or 2.7 billion people— don’t sit at a desk."

In industries such as healthcare, transportation, retail, education, manufacturing and field service, workers spend their time on-the-go. "They work room-to-room, from a vehicle, in a large open space inside a building or outdoors," says English. "We see these employees in roles such as frontline workers, operational staff, nurses, pilots, flight mechanics and cashiers."

Most of these "deskless workers" use technology to perform specific tasks at specific times, and tech can make their jobs easier and faster. However, more than 60% of "deskless workers" report dissatisfaction with the tech they use.

How Jamf helps mobile workers succeed

Jamf offers modern work tools designed to operate together, right out of the box. These capabilities include:

  • Delivering an Apple-first, Apple-best experience by building on native Apple frameworks
  • Performing over-the-air management and security tasks without interrupting end-user work
  • Streamlining administration by simplifying IT workflows and redundant processes
  • Remaining compatible and reliable with every new OS release
  • Powering quick, secure transitions between shifts for shared devices

1Global and SuitSupply: Global mobile devices and enhanced security

1Global offers device and communication solutions for simplified provisioning, optimized network performance, and cost-effective management that empowers businesses with uninterrupted global connectivity.

SuitSupply, a personalized tailor and styling company, provides 1,000 devices across seven countries to tailors. This allows tailors to customize the suit-buying experience for their customers.

English welcomed Jamie Cole from 1Global and Twan Scholten from SuitSupply to the stage for an interview.

The interview covered:

  • How the integration of eSIM with Jamf Pro transforms the management of mobile devices in organizations
  • How the adoption of mobile devices enabled by 1Global’s eSIM and Jamf Pro changed the day-to-day experience of SuitSupply's tailors and customers
  • How coupling Jamf Pro with 1Global’s eSIM enhances security
  • SuitSupply's benefits from this partnership in reduced IT costs, increased efficiency

Employee Badge with Jamf Trust

Milind Patel walked the audience through Employee Badge with Jamf Trust, which offers Trusted Access to office spaces, eliminating the need for key cards.

"Instead," said Patel, "employees can store a practical and secure digital badge on their mobile devices. This not only ensures seamless office access but also bridges the gap between employees’ personal devices and a convenient work experience. With mobile integration and BYOD employees can easily and securely move between their personal and professional worlds, enhancing both security and convenience."

How it works

  • Account-Driven User Enrollment separates personal data and corporate data on mobile devices.
  • The Jamf Trust app enables access and security through Jamf Connect and Jamf Protect.
  • Jamf BYOD ensures that only trusted users on sanctioned, safe devices are authorized to access work apps and data.

"If a user loses permissions or a security risk is detected on a device," explained Patel, "access to apps and data can be blocked automatically. To defend against work app threats, Jamf BYOD offers powerful workflows to quarantine or remediate devices in response to risks being identified."

Apple and Android

"We’re Apple-first, Apple-best," said Patel, "and we’ll continue to stay the course. But we also know not everyone has an iPhone, so how do you bring other platforms into your BYOD program? For those users, Jamf supports security capabilities for Android, ensuring a productive experience for every end user, and a secure baseline for every admin."

Milind Patel, Jamf, presenting at the Commercial State of the Union at JNUC 2024

Jamf Threat Labs

The threat to mobile devices is real.

In 2023, Jamf Threat Labs discovered new security threats, including Social Engineering 2.0. "Not only is Jamf Threat Labs helping you, our customers, but their publicly available research findings and new vulnerability discoveries are also helping to keep our wider community safer," said Patel.

They also found:

  • Pegasus: Jamf analyzed two compromised iPhones and found unique indicators of compromise (IOCs) and evidence of active spyware campaigns, showing that attackers target both new and old devices using this continuously evolving spyware.
  • Fake Airplane Mode: This tricks users into believing Airplane Mode is enabled while attackers maintain network access to the device, compromising privacy and security.
  • Fake Lockdown Mode: Attackers tamper with Apple’s Lockdown Mode, creating visual cues of protection without actually implementing the security features. This leaves devices vulnerable.
  • Fake iOS Update: a sophisticated technique to mimic iOS updates deceives users into thinking they are secure while compromising their devices.

Jamf's work is never done

"With all of the exciting things we’ve touched on today, I want to assure you that Jamf is never done in our mission to help organizations succeed with Apple," said Katie English in closing. "We will always be your partners to help you on your path to success, and we know Apple will be there, too."

Education Keynote

Suraj Mohandas, VP, Product Strategy at Jamf, started the Education keynote address by discussing how schools can go further in education with Jamf and Apple.

Jamf began in education. Today, Jamf supports over 42 million students across more than 40,000 educational institutions worldwide.

Watch the full JNUC 2024 Education State of the Union

Mohandas encouraged attendees to imagine:

  • A classroom for young learners where simplicity is key
  • A middle school or high school classroom in which students require specialized apps
  • A creative design lab at a university equipped with specific tools tailored to advanced needs

"Each scenario," said Mohandas, "begins with a clear vision of what the device must achieve. And from that vision, the deployment strategy is crafted. It's not just about handing over a well-managed device to students, teachers, or staff; it's about deeply understanding the purpose these devices are meant to fulfill, and the outcomes they drive. This simple yet powerful concept brings a diverse group of stakeholders to the table for a common goal: do what is right for the user."

Purposeful deployment

Jamf's vision for transforming learning: purposeful deployment, reimagines classrooms while streamlining IT workflows.

Purposeful Deployment with Apple and Jamf means that every user has access to personalized devices that deliver privacy and security. The main focus: enabling students.

Mat Pullen, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Education, outlined the philosophy behind the concept of "purposeful deployment."

"To foster an environment where technology enhances the educational experience for all," said Pullen, "we must demand the best from ourselves. Simply managing devices isn't enough; we need to enable educators to integrate technology seamlessly into any lesson, meeting the personalized needs of learners. It's not just about using technology; it's about learning with technology that makes all the difference."

Successful deployments in education need a purpose.

"Purposeful deployment is not a one-size-fits-all," continued Pullen.

Instead, it is rooted in core foundations:

  • Whoever uses a device must have the customized tools they need to learn or teach.
  • The security and privacy of users must be protected, whether a shared device or 1:1 deployment.
  • It's crucial that users see the value in the technology. Because educators can do their jobs without technology, whatever Apple admins deploy must engage students in new ways.
  • Whatever technology schools employ has to be for all: a first-time administrator, a curriculum leader seeking to enhance student outcomes, or the parent who wishes to balance technology use at home.

The Jamf education ecosystem

"You chose Apple based on the knowledge that those devices will be used in a transformative way," said Pullen, "and positively impact learner outcomes through creativity, accessibility and mobility."

That's why Jamf offers an entire system for schools that supports multiple goals. This system:

  • Provisions devices beginning with Apple School Manager and Jamf to ensure devices meet the needs of the intended end users: staff and students.
  • Builds on Apple Classroom to support classroom setup, lesson planning and teacher confidence.
  • Ensures equity with each student having equal but customized access.
  • Engages users with Jamf tools and tight integrations with education-specific applications.
  • Keeps the focus on the device's purpose rather than the device itself.

Our system also ensures that educators do not need to be IT specialists to get the most out of the devices, and goes beyond managing the device by incorporating layers of security against attack.

Product updates for educational institutions

Suraj Mohandas invited Mischa van der Bent, Manager, Consulting Engineering, to walk a rapt audience through educationally-based product updates.

Jamf Safe Internet

Jamf's security- and privacy-first approach helps to keep students safe from accessing inappropriate content. At the same time, Jamf protects their privacy and helps them focus on learning when online. Jamf Nation spoke and we answered with the following updates and enhancements:

  • Time-based policies: seamlessly organize device security throughout its use with different sets of controls for in-school and at-home use.
  • Managed software updates: create a Blueprint for managed software updates and scope them with Smart Groups or static groups.
  • Dark Mode: use Dark Mode, now available in Jamf School, to bring accessible features making it easier for all users to read text.
  • On-device capabilities: Keep learning sessions free from interruptions with on-device content filtering.
  • On-device threat prevention: Offer a more secure and efficient way to minimize threats, increase student privacy and protect networks.

Mat Pullen discussed the importance of remaining focused on what is important.

Keep the focus on teaching and learning—not on IT.

"We want every teacher," said Pullen, "regardless of their technological know-how, to easily use these tools to support students in the classroom, ensuring ALL students achieve."

Simplifying the process keeps the focus on learning. It ensures that technology serves its ultimate purpose: enhancing education.

Improvements to Jamf Teacher interface

"That's why," said Pullen, "we have improved the Jamf Teacher interface to make it even easier for educators to get the devices set up for exactly what they need in the classroom."

With lesson templates, educators can now easily launch lessons onto student devices, removing apps, enabling websites and restricting functions that could be a distraction.

Apple Education Partner Program

Apple Education Partner Program apps are now listed directly in Jamf Teacher.

"These apps offer targeted solutions and often include professional learning opportunities to help educators make the most of technology," said Pullen.

Jamf Educator

Continued education is crucial, even for the educators. That's why we've enhanced the Jamf Educator portal, offering new opportunities for teacher training.

"Now, you can connect with a global teacher community and explore real-world use cases of Jamf in classrooms worldwide. These updates highlight broader integrations with our education solution partners, helping you craft a unique deployment, tailored to your needs."

Additionally, to continue to support large scale deployments, Jamf School supports both iPad and Mac management.

Jamf in K-12 schools

Conor Bloodworth-McKowan from Prince William School District discussed how technology integration supports student learning and development in the district, including specific technologies that improve outcomes, how teachers and staff incorporate IT into their teaching, and how the district ensures equitable access.

Jamf in the University

Stephen Johnson from Texas A&M University joined the presentation to discuss how Jamf helps him to ensure that IT services meet the needs of all students and staff, how they measure outcomes and what role cybersecurity plays in their IT deployment strategy.

MATTER Innovation Hubs

Suraj Mohandas rejoined the presentation to offer updates on Jamf's MATTER Innovation Hubs that delivered transformational learning experiences to remote locations around the world.

Since partnering with MATTER in 2017, Innovation Hubs have expanded to 17 locations across six countries.

In 2022, Jamf again partnered with MATTER to create the MATTER Career Readiness Institute in Zimbabwe. This program serves as the next step for graduates of the Innovation Hub. Now in its third year, the program has 18 students and two graduates who are now working remotely at Jamf in software engineering roles.

"This is a Purposeful Deployment success story we are especially proud of given the impact these programs are having on the next generation," said Mohandas, "and it serves as a great example of how Jamf unlocks the potential for Apple in education."

MATTER Career Readiness Institute

Tsitsi Murohoke told attendees more about the MATTER Innovation Hub and MATTER Career Readiness Institute in Zimbabwe.

Murohoke has built a kinder-to-career pathway creating an inclusive, collaborative environment before students even step into the MATTER Innovation Hub.

"Our hubs are designed with collaborative seating, gender parity with at least 50% of students being girls, and accessibility for all students," said Murohoke. "With Apple's accessibility features, we ensure every student can fully engage in our program."

Students begin at the Innovation Hub during primary and secondary school, learning Swift and other key skills.

After secondary school, top graduates are selected for advanced technical training through the center's fundamentals courses and workshops. This includes Jamf and Apple Swift certifications, preparing them for remote technical roles.

Tools the center uses include:

  • Jamf School
  • Jamf Teacher
  • Apple Classroom
  • Jamf Safe Internet
  • A custom-built app called App Cat, which helps facilitators access a catalog of apps organized by subject, grade, and Zimbabwean national standards.

"This program thrives due to its interconnected components," said Murohoke, "teaching essential skills, Swift development, and use of the right tools for both students and facilitators. We empower students to contribute locally and positively impact their communities, reducing brain drain."

Jamf expects to employ 30 Zimbabweans by 2026. Currently, Jamf employs two full-time Associate Software Engineers and has four interns across Software Engineering and Customer Support. With partner companies also hiring our graduates, I’m confident we’ll reach our goal.

"The long-term impact of this program will be felt for generations," said Murohoke, "thanks to the opportunities offered to ambitious students."
