Apple and Jamf empower students in Taiwan with world-class digital classrooms

Taiwan understands that education isn't just about tech in the classroom; it’s about a new way to learn and enhance engagement between teachers, students and parents. With Jamf's help, Taiwan's Ministry of Education (MoE) deployed iPad devices to schools across the country. With Jamf Pro, the iPads are personalized for each and every student, at any scale, allowing them to work at their own pace. The content filtering features of Jamf Protect and Jamf Safe Internet help monitor student behavior and prevent access to improper websites containing adult, violence or gambling content.

Maximizing technology initiatives with Apple and Jamf

To kick off the countrywide initiative for the upcoming four years, a project which includes device + mobile device management (MDM) + charging cart + peripheral, Taiwan’s MoE provided schools a choice of various tablet options and built a custom unified endpoint manager (UEM) to integrate with selected MDM using application programming interface (API) and a set of prerequisite features needing support, such as application and configuration deployment or locking lost devices. Jamf was chosen as their MDM for its powerful management and security capabilities.

As with any large-scale deployment, planning was paramount—and there were a multitude of factors to consider: device set-up protocol, remote administration, bandwidth, distribution, tech support and more. A further complication was the fact that not all of Taiwan’s teachers were familiar with the incoming technology, so it was of utmost importance to educate the educators and the IT teams. Recognizing the enormity of their ambitions, Taiwan trusted Jamf to assist with planning and execution.

Over an eight week period, over 100 training sessions were hosted together with Apple and Jamf, with an average of 10,000 iPads deployed per day, ultimately training 3,000 teachers. While teachers learned to use the iPad in the classroom for each subject, IT admins were trained in the automation of iPad management - from zero-touch deployment to smart group automation and from managing Apple IDs to shared iPads.

Jamf helped us realize our countrywide vision to provide the best learning experience for our students. With Jamf, we were able to deploy iPad devices to our students within a few weeks — a shining example of how Jamf focuses on their customers first.

Saving time with Jamf Pro on complex device deployments and management

For IT admins working in education, equipping students and classrooms with learning devices can be a challenge. The task is daunting enough for the average school or district, imagine trying to deploy a large number of iPads to students in classrooms across an entire country. That’s exactly what Taiwan’s MoE sought to do, as part of their broader effort to create world-class digital classrooms for all their K-12 students.

Jamf Pro was chosen for its powerful workflows for device and app management, inventory and security. To integrate with the UEM, Jamf Pro RESTful API was used as it supports JSON and XML files and was easy to understand, making it a big win for the developers.

And as Taiwan’s MoE developed their own ID provider, they required their MDM providers to support access for both their teachers and IT administrators. Jamf integrated with MoE’s IdP using SAML 2.0 protocol enabling admins to access the Jamf Pro console using their IdP ID.

After implementation, IT admins gained instant visibility on the status of the devices and helped consolidate inventory into one dashboard, making it easy for admins to identify which ones required updates. With Jamf’s focus on delivering same-day support with every new Apple OS release, Taiwan’s MoE makes the most out of their Apple investment and ensures users, devices and data are protected and secured.

With zero-touch deployment, device enrollment and configuration can be automated to provide a scalable zero-touch experience, personalized for each user. Admins can create dynamic smart groups for managed devices based on specific attributes and trigger actions for predefined groups, making management and security tasks fast and easy.

“After our school implemented Jamf, the iPad management time reduced a lot since it’s easy to use and with high stability” - Wei-Jung Tsai, IT Admin, Zhiqing Emementary School

Jamf bring your own device (BYOD) provides the flexibility to manage personal devices while maintaining end user privacy. When a student brings in a BYOD device, they can take it back home to study and still be protected. This way IT admins can keep the device under the school MDM and block apps and network resources, while teachers can safely provide learning resources for the students to complete assignments in their own time. Jamf uses APIs to connect student data to the platform of the MoE and follows Apple's policy of emphasizing privacy, de-identifying this data, to maintain the privacy of each student.

iPads for personalized teaching and learning

Educators need powerful, intuitive tools that serve all students — no matter who they are, how they learn or where they learn, and tablets have become an ubiquitous part of the modern educational experience. Combined with technology, high-speed internet and innovative e-learning systems, devices like iPads can open up an exciting world of opportunities for interactive and personalized learning.

The digital environment enables students to make movies, videos, podcasts and books and to sit for digital exams — all on the iPad. The iPads are easy to use, powerful devices that are self-correcting, so students get instant feedback while helping teachers scale more effectively in the classroom. Apple’s accessibility features also make the iPad a powerful learning tool for students with special educational needs or disabilities.

“By empowering students with digital tools, we hope to enhance their ability for self-learning.” - Betty Zheng, Teacher, Zhiqing Emementary School

Keeping students focused, engaged and on track

Jamf purpose-built educational tools are known for the simple, fast setup and teacher-specific workflows allowing seamless management of devices no matter where they’re used to offer a tailored learning experience.

With Jamf Teacher app combined with Apple Classroom, educators can easily manage classrooms, communicate with students and prepare and share lessons, increasing overall student focus and engagement and creating an active learning environment.

“By implementing personalized learning we can help both students and teachers to learn and teach more efficiently.” - Jenny Huang, Vice Principal, WAGOR High School

Students’ creativity should be able to extend beyond the classroom. After students leave the school premises, parents can use the Jamf Parent app at home to manage the iPads managed at school by the school's MDM. For BYOD devices, IT admins can help parents create their accounts by offering training videos or documentation to learn how to use the Jamf Parent app at home. With the app, parents can decide which applications children can use at home, limit social software use time, check device location, view basic information of the device and more. Parents can also help keep homework sessions focused and free of distraction.

“Parents can feel relieved to know that Jamf MDM can help children use the iPad in the right way. If they use an app that should not be used, the school can block it right away. Only learning-related apps will be left on the iPad.” - Jenny Huang, Vice Principal, WAGOR High School

Jamf bridges the gap between what Apple creates and what education requires. Through rigorous planning, training and collaboration with Apple and Jamf, Taiwan’s Ministry of Education provides all K-12 students countrywide a modern, active and engaging learning environment.
