iTunes could not connect to the iPad...

Keep getting the error message "iTunes could not connect to the iPad “iPad” because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes." No iPad, nor lightning cable is plugged into the computer. Started the computer this morning with nothing plugged in, then opened iTunes, and immediately got this prompt. When I plug in the iPad and enter the passcode, the message does go away. But, I have to do that every time I open iTunes. Thoughts?
