Razorpay, one of India's leading fintech companies, chose Jamf to manage and secure their Apple devices, enhancing employee satisfaction and operational efficiency. By adopting Jamf Pro and Jamf Connect to automate device management and improve security, Razorpay's IT team can efficiently manage device onboarding, customize deployments for different departments, and ensure security updates, improving both employee experience and IT operations.
Razorpay is a full-stack financial services company offering comprehensive and innovative payment and business banking solutions, built over robust technology to address the entire length and breadth of the payment and banking journey. Razorpay’s mission: to revolutionize money management for online businesses by providing clean, developer-friendly APIs and hassle-free integration.
In essence, Razorpay makes it easier for customers to focus on building great products, while they simplify the online payment experience. As Gowtham Jayaram, Senior Director of Engineering at Razorpay explains, “Our vision at Razorpay is to be a one-stop platform for all the money movement needs of a business. Any money movement needs that our merchants have, we want to solve it for them.”
Customer-focused, tech-first
The core values that drive this revolution: a laser focus on customer needs, paired with a commitment to providing innovative, reliable technology.
“We’re a product-first company,” says Gowtham Jayaram, “providing an extremely reliable and secure platform and secure infrastructure so that merchants don’t have to think twice about coming on to our systems.” Because they’re customer-focused, “We listen to them, we innovate, we build products that take care of our merchant’s problems.”
It’s a formula that’s fueled phenomenal growth and success. Since its launch in 2014, Razorpay has grown to shape India’s fintech ecosystem, providing a range of solutions to 5,000,000 businesses across India and southeast Asia.
Great success requires great tech
When your customer expects nothing but the best, your business needs to consistently deliver just that. From the perspective of Razorpay employees, this requires using Macs as the device of choice. As an engineering organization tasked with building and designing the best quality products, “the best product has to run on the best operating system, and Mac systems are the best systems available for any engineering department or people,” says Imran Mohammed, IT Director at Razorpay. Employees appreciate the user-friendly hardware, slick aesthetics, processing speed and security levels offered by Macs.
Another must? The alignment of macOS with open-source development tools. “Mac provides a frictionless development environment for our engineers,” says Gowtham Jayaram. “We need to enable developers to do their jobs.”
The next crucial step to empowering employees to do their best work: harnessing the power of device management with Jamf to automate and scale Apple IT and security workflows.
Made for each other: Apple and Jamf
Prior to Jamf, IT could only manage single profiles on Macs. But very quickly, they saw workflows such as onboarding employees grow from easy workflows that worked for onboarding just a few new employees to be too time-consuming for their rapid company growth. The need to prepare Macs for 20 people per day could take days.
They knew the end-user experience wasn’t up to par, with frustrations mounting as Macs were not able to be ready in time, or software was missing installations due to manual errors.
From IT’s perspective, Jamf simplifies and automates tasks to help them provide the best end-user experience while managing and securing organizational IT assets at the highest level.
The result: employees love using Apple devices, while IT can trust the devices are reliably secured and protected.
There is only one product for Mac, and that is Jamf. It is easy to use and good for Mac.
Making life easier for IT
The incidents of manual errors also dropped, as deployments of packages were automated and delivered to everyone at once. “I think the majority of our user experience problems have gone to negligible now.”
During the pandemic, as Macs began to be sent directly to home locations, zero-touch deployment became a necessity. Thanks to Jamf’s integration with the the identity provider and Jamf Connect, onboarding Razorpay employees is now as simple as turning on their new laptop, connecting to Wi-Fi, and entering the email and password provided by the organization.
“The employee experience is good, and the enrollment process has been cut short,” says Vinay Bengaluru Lakshmana, Razorpay IT Manager. “Whether remotely or in-office, that is the beauty of Jamf plus IDP enrollment.”
With Jamf, IT can select people by groups to customize deployments. “We can say, 'these people belong to the Finance team, these people to HR, these people belong to Marketing', and we need to push something to those people only. We can do that kind of segregation depending on the duties of the departments, and then we can push only what is needed to them,” says Imran Mohammed.
When it comes to mass deployments, there is no more need to ask for permissions or cooperation - “you do the push in the background, and all the systems get the new thing in less than 24 hours.”
With Jamf in place, the majority of things will not take more than 10 to 15 minutes for the entire enrollment process.
A whole new world
In the new world of hybrid work, where employees may not be working in-office, or have access to a central reception area, Razorpay has found the ability to make company announcements via device Wallpaper messaging especially helpful. With Jamf they’re able to push big announcements on the device screens every month.
When it comes to the challenge of handling encryptions and app management, it’s easy to pull reports showing what machines need updates. In the case of encryption, “We can send an announcement to the user, 'Your computer is not encrypted, go ahead and turn it on from your Self Service.' The user can turn on the security by themselves and keep the Macs secure,” says Vinay Bengaluru Lakshmana.
And for employees who leave, the offboarding process is both simple and secure. “It’s so easy. When an employee exits the organization, we can just lock out the particular device and ensure that the particular data has been completely wiped, without any further distractions for my user’s time perspective or from a device time perspective.”
Last but not least, the team is achieving time savings by pushing scripts to all devices quickly. “Jamf makes it very easy. We can write a script fully online within a Jamf console, push it across to all the devices, and we are going to get 100% results within no time."
“That’s one of the beauties of Jamf, is that it ensures the synchronization time between the Jamf server and the devices is very minimal,” says Vinay Bengaluru Lakshmana.
Continuing benefits of innovation
As Razorpay continues to grow to meet the needs of its customers, they know they can look to Jamf to develop new solutions to help their employees be their most productive.
The most recent feature Vinay Bengaluru Lakshmana appreciates: the ease of App installers. He notes it has eliminated the worry of checking for release dates, and the difficulty of make sure all employee devices are running the latest, most secure version of apps such as Slack or Zoom.
“Now I just choose the app and one click, it’s pushed. Within 48 hours I can see that almost all of our machines are updated.”
Simple, quick and secure.
It’s this typical Jamf workflow – and partnership – that is completely in sync with Razorpay’s own core values.
For the IT team, it's a welcome sharing of responsibilities. “Security and privacy is being maintained very well,” says Imram Mohammed. “IT can now be responsible for idea assets, and Jamf has become accountable for our IT assets.”
