Schuberg Philis, a Dutch IT powerhouse founded in 2000, is renowned for its blend of technical expertise and a unique company culture emphasizing responsibility and autonomy. Menno Meijer and Gerard Spierenburg from the Schuberg Philis team have leveraged Jamf Pro and Jamf Connect Basic to master the art of employee onboarding, adapt to the challenges of remote work and eliminate password issues with local accounts.
Streamlined employee onboarding with Jamf
Menno and Gerard, integral members of the Go-To team at Schuberg Philis, are the architects of the company's exceptional onboarding experience, which aims to provide new hires with a smooth start into their employment and a first look at the company’s unique culture.
The onboarding process starts when a new employee powers on their MacBook. Following a successful Wi-Fi connection, the Jamf Remote Management window pops up, notifying the user that their device is about to be enrolled into Jamf Pro. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) kicks in, initiating the enrollment process. To keep users engaged, a clever interactive game can be played while essential apps are installed. This complete out-of-the-box experience is devised to get devices working fully on employees’ first workday.
Adapting to remote work with Jamf Cloud
Schuberg Philis was already using Jamf Pro for device management on-premise. However, to bolster agility in provisioning and managing MacBooks for remote staff, they migrated to Jamf Cloud, utilizing AWS infrastructure. The transition went smoothly, thanks to the support from Jamf.
“From the moment that I started here, we've been using Jamf on premise. After a few years we've moved to Jamf Cloud because it made it easier for us, but also for our end users in terms of working from home, to be more agile when it comes to setting up those MacBooks and managing them.” says Gerard.
Resolving password woes with Jamf and Okta
One of the most persistent challenges Schuberg Philis faced was with passwords in local accounts on MacBooks. There was no cohesive connection between their identity provider and local accounts, causing frequent password problems. The solution? Jamf Connect Basic, a purpose-built tool for Mac designed to streamline provisioning, authentication and identity management.
Jamf Connect Basic works by giving users the power to leverage a single cloud-based identity for immediate access to the resources and apps they need to be productive. This powerful tool allowed them to integrate with Okta, their identity provider, enabling users to log in with their Okta credentials, which, in turn, served as the basis for their local account. The result was a streamlined password reset process that consistently worked.
The integration between Jamf and Okta delivered not only easy access to company resources and apps through Okta Identity Cloud, but other benefits like enhanced security through multifactor authentication (MFA), passwordless single sign-on (SSO) and smooth device enrollment for Jamf-managed devices. It also meant a native login experience on Apple devices, making device management and user authentication as smooth and efficient as possible.
Gerard Spierenburg emphasizes the benefits of Jamf Connect, stating "it enables people to do the password reset and have it succeed all the time, which is great. We used to have a lot of issues with passwords, and then they were just locked out of the device.”
Scaling up with Jamf: The road ahead
Schuberg Philis' success story with Jamf Pro and Jamf Connect serves as an inspirational example of how a commitment to a seamless employee experience, adaptability in the face of challenges, and strategic technology partnerships can drive success in the modern workplace. By harnessing these tools, Schuberg Philis has not only mastered employee onboarding, but also set a standard for excellence in device management and security, ensuring they stay ahead in the ever-evolving IT landscape.
