Zuyderland Medisch Centrum
Netherlands
Zuyderland Medisch Centrum is a healthcare organization serving the province of Limburg in the south of the Netherlands, consisting of multiple care centers, nursing homes and hospices. With nearly 1,000 hospital beds, Zuyderland is a key provider of medical services in the region. As a teaching hospital, it contributes to the transmission of knowledge and the training of upcoming healthcare specialists. While Zuyderland’s commitment to enhancing patient-centered care with technology is nothing new, its deployment of an iPad fleet equipped with BeagleBoxx Bedside and managed with Jamf MDM marks a major stride in how it supports patient wellbeing and streamlines employee workflows.
Adding mobility to the bedside care equation
Administrators at Zuyderland’s Sittard-Geleen location were concerned that the Siemens HiMed terminals mounted by patient bedsides were becoming obsolete and were unable to offer some desired functionality that had been identified since their installation. Having decided to replace the HiMed terminals, they began searching for a solution with the following qualities:
- Able to offer all desired functionality
- Modern and future-proof
- Mobile so patients could enjoy its benefits outside the room
- Easy and cost-effective to implement
- Offering increased efficiency and effectiveness of hospital workflows
BeagleBoxx Bedside emerges as the winning solution
Jamf Solution Partner BeagleBoxx Bedside (powered by Brightfish), offered Zuyderland a solution package consisting of an iPad fleet loaded with its bedside care app and mounted to the existing arms used for the HiMeds to save time and money. The following modules were available to patients in the BeagleBoxx app:
- Patient entertainment including live TV, hospital broadcasting and games
- Ward-specific Information
- Room automation (lights, temperature, blinds, door)
- Internet access, video chat and notification system
- Integrated meal ordering, with connectivity to the hospital food service system
- Secure connectivity to electronic health records and hospital information systems
In addition, each iPad that Zuyderland acquired was to be fully managed using Jamf Pro, which features a thorough integration with BeagleBoxx.
Impact of new solution on hospital costs and processes
The team from Brightfish was able to roll out the first round of over 500 iPad devices in Zuyderland’s Sittard-Geleen location in two months, a process that included comprehensive training for hospital staff. This involved training 400 staff in just a few weeks by providing them hands-on access using the iPad mobile service. This approach proved to be very successful, creating awareness of what would change in their immediate environment and supporting more desirable patient capabilities and outcomes.
In addition to the money saved by installing the iPad mounts onto the existing terminal arms, estimated at close to €30,000, Zuyderland significantly streamlined the food preparation system by encouraging patients to order meals through the designated BeagleBoxx module. With 60% of patients currently receiving their meals this way, the hospital has been able to allocate staff efficiently, improve accuracy of food preparation estimates and reduce the amount of food waste.
Jamf’s contributions to iPad fleet management
The rapid and lightweight rollout of Zuyderland’s new iPad fleet was made possible by using Jamf Pro for enrolling and managing the devices. “Jamf is very stable, which makes the process of managing the iPads and the continuous flow of updates of iOS and apps manageable for us within the time and budget restraints we have set,” explains Peter Sommer, Chief Commercial Officer of Brightfish. In addition to keeping the devices updated and deploying the appropriate apps, IT admins can easily reset a device remotely whenever a patient leaves, preparing it for the next occupant of the bed. If a device goes missing, Jamf can track its location and lock it down if necessary.
By allowing for zero-touch enrollment and management that allows admins to exercise most necessary functions remotely, Jamf has facilitated Zuyderland’s ability to quickly roll out the BeagleBoxx solution and scale it as desired by adding it to other facilities. This highly mobile and adaptable solution saves time for IT admins and hospital staff, but more importantly it empowers patients to use Apple technology for the whatever purpose and in whatever place they need.
Jamf is very stable, which makes the process of managing the iPads and the continuous flow of updates of iOS and apps manageable for us within the time and budget restraints we have set.
Jamf is a great company and partner to work with, and we feel that we get great support on our quest to have the absolute best patient experience with iPads in hospitals.
