Healthcare's digital revolution

As healthcare becomes increasingly digital, tools that enhance patient care and streamline clinical communications are critical. Tech should equip hospitals and clinics to support not only patients and their families, but healthcare providers as well.

Working together for smooth workflows

When offering Apple device management in healthcare, MDM and endpoint protection solutions must be useful for the special needs of patients and clinicians.

Patients increasingly want more room control and a better overall experience. They want access to their medical records and notes, they want to control the room settings such as blinds and TV settings, and want be able to call and communicate with clinical staff. All of this is possible with the right software and an iPad paired with an Apple TV.

Clinical staff want devices that require no troubleshooting and often use shared devices. They want those devices to give them the apps and access they need when they need it.

Jamf and . . .

When IT administrators combine best-in-class MDM and endpoint protection with industry-specific apps, they can meet all these challenges seamlessly.

Healthcare Listener integration

One of the most valuable advantages of Jamf is that we integrate with so many partners.

Healthcare Listener is from one of those partners.

Healthcare Listener is an electronic health record (EHR) integration with Jamf Pro. It listens for admit, discharge and transfer ADT commands.

When Healthcare Listener receives an 'admit' ADT message, Jamf Pro interprets the message to automatically send remote commands to mobile devices. These remote commands are based on rules IT configures.

This can deploy room controls, information on their condition, communication tools and filtered entertainment to the patient device.

When Healthcare Listener receives a 'discharge' message, Jamf Pro removes the device from all specific and identifying data and either wipes the device or deploys Return to Service.

UCLA Health and Healthcare Listener

UCLA has used Healthcare Listener to improve the patient experience while in the hospital. UCLA offers patients bedside iPads that are customized for each patient's needs through automation.

The iPad functions as a remote for the Apple TV in each room, as well as for apps and clinical information.

When the status in their EHR moves to "discharged," the iPad automatically clears all patient data and readies itself for a startup with the next patient's apps and permissions.

It was particularly important to UCLA that this all happen without the need for a staff member to even touch the devices, as the biggest complaint nursing staff had was that they were spending too much time troubleshooting devices, which took them away from their nursing duties.

Virtual Visits

Virtual Visits is an iPad-based telehealth solution for patients to easily connect with their providers and families without the need for logins or passwords.

This Jamf Pro integration automates the deployment of Zoom or Microsoft Teams to iPad devices, removing the common problems with ad-hoc video telehealth and needing no IT interaction.

Oxford Health and Virtual Visits

During the lockdowns in the first wave of COVID 19 infections, Oxford Health Trust depended on Jamf to help them change how they served patients. Patients in-hospital received iPads to connect with loved ones unable to visit, and the organization also offered the devices for virtual visits from home after discharge.

The solutions they used during this time are still aiding Oxford Health today, as virtual visits have become commonplace.

Return to Service

The Return to Service app allows clinicians, patients and others to erase and refresh an iOS or iPadOS device with a single tap: without needing to visit or consult with IT. This skips all steps typically required for re-enrollment after an MDM wipe. The device remains connected to wireless and retains its original language and region.

You can also automate Return to Service. Organizations can configure the Return to Service app to automatically re-provision a device. Or, if they want to provide more control to frontline users, to re-provision the device in one tap.

Sharp Healthcare and Return to Service

Sharp Healthcare is the largest healthcare provider in San Diego and sees more than 16,000 patients per day in their clinics, hospitals and urgent care facilities. The organization has around 8,000 devices spread throughout.

Because the protection of patient data is paramount to Sharp Healthcare, they ensured that each device was wiped completely between patients.

This certainly kept the patient data safe, but it also unfortunately removed the devices from the wireless connection, necessitating nurses to help each patient get started on each device.

Jamf Mobile Assist

Jamf Mobile Assist enables managers to troubleshoot very simple issues with staff and patient devices such as clearing device passcodes or erasing and restarting an iOS or iPadOS device. This means they can enable productivity faster than if they needed to contact IT.

Managers scan a QR code to visit the Jamf Mobile Assist app to take action on simple issues without ever needing access to Jamf Pro.

Cincinnati Children's and Jamf Mobile Assist

Cincinnati Children's combines Healthcare Listener and Jamf Mobile Assist to allow staff members limited access to iPad controls if necessary. While most controls are automated as Healthcare Listener sends MDM commands based patient status in the PHP system, there is always the potential for an unexpected room change or patient status requiring staff to re-allocate iPads on the fly.

Jamf APIs for Apple administrators

For even more granular access to settings, many Apple admins use one of two powerful Jamf APIs: the 'classic' API, using JSON and XML, and the Jamf Pro API which is JSON only.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital and the Jamf API

Admins use the API in a multitude of ways. Cincinnati Children's uses it to change extension attributes, run calls for device and user information, run return to service commands, and much more.

Jamf Setup and Jamf Reset

Jamf Setup enables end users to quickly set up and configure a mobile device with nothing but a login or biometrical authentication such as a fingerprint or face recognition. Pre-configured and automated settings customize devices with the apps and permissions unique to that job or that patient.

Jamf Reset enables automations that reset a device to the original factory settings when a clinician signs off or a patient checks out.

Together, Jamf Setup and Jamf Reset support a single login workflow that simplifies and secures shared devices in clinics or hospitals.

Jamf Setup and Jamf Reset: Nemours Children's Health and ChildLife

As distraction is a key component in pediatric medicine, Nemours Children's Health has teamed up with ChildLife to offer their young charges video games appropriate to their ages.

Some patients remain in the hospital for weeks or even months, and some stay for one night. Either way, Nemours can offer them appropriate games to play on an iPad pre-configured for the child's use.

Jamf Setup and Jamf Reset allow Nemours and ChildLife to skip laborious IT hours setting up, wiping, and re-setting up devices. Using Smart Groups in Jamf Pro, IT sets configurations based on patient type only one time per group, and the rest of the day-to-day work of setup and reset is automated.

Kids get to play the games they love right away and nurses can focus on patient care rather than device troubleshooting,
