The influence of student device choice on the modern workplace

Businesses eager to recruit and retain the next generation tech-savvy employee would do well to offer them Mac.

In the face of the upcoming global talent shortage, businesses need every advantage they can get to recruit and retain in-demand, tech-savvy employees. A recent study revealed one key strategy: offering computer choice to employees.

Jamf commissioned this study from Vanson Bourne, a third-party research firm, which conducted a survey on current college and university students to discover the extent to which computer choices influence their employment decisions.

Students across multiple areas of study provided insight regarding computer brand choice — and what they expect as they enter the workforce. In this ebook, we reveal current computer use trends among students, the extent to which they feel Macs are suited to their needs, and how these trends and preferences will impact their choice of employer after graduation.

Computer choices of the next generation workforce

Simply put, the next generation workforce wants Mac. More than half of all survey participants believe Mac delivers better value, and 71 percent of students would prefer a Mac if given the opportunity. They believe that Mac helps keep them more productive and creative, and they are already familiar with other Mac devices.

What drives student computer choices?

While Mac owners cited numerous reasons they preferred their computers such as ease of use, reliability, and better synchronization with their other devices, the dominant driver for PC users was one factor only: price.

Choosing an employer: modern talent needs modern tools

67% of students are more likely to choose and stay at an organization that offers them a choice in work computer, and the majority of students see Mac as a better value. They see Mac as more intuitive, longer-lasting, more secure and more encouraging of productivity. Next generation job seekers see Mac as more intuitive, more modern and more easily integrated with their other devices.
